Real Stories, Real Transformations

The Gottman Institute has helped countless individuals, couples, and families improve their relationships.

Gottman Method Marathon Couples Therapy Study

Six Second Kiss

Gottman Method Marathon Couples Therapy Study

Receive therapy from a skilled, compassionate, highly-trained therapist.

The Gottman Institute is seeking ~60 couples to participate in a Gottman Method Marathon Therapy study. There are limited spots available. Marathon Couples Therapy is a dynamic alternative to traditional weekly therapy sessions.

You will be able to work with a skilled, compassionate Certified Gottman Therapist either online via HIPAA compliant telehealth or in-person. Your participation in this study will not only help your relationship, it will also help us understand what couples are experiencing today and what helps couples cultivate a healthier relationship in couples therapy.

What is Gottman Method Marathon Therapy?

Marathon Couples Therapy is 15-20 hours of therapy offered for three to four consecutive days. You will have time to talk in-depth about the struggles and challenges of the relationship to a degree that simply cannot happen in the traditional, extremely brief and fragmented style of couples therapy that is usually done an hour or so at a time. There is time to process past injuries that have never healed, and time to understand how these injuries have impacted the relationship. There is time to learn and practice new communication skills to help you have more productive conversations. There’s time to rebuild.

The therapist will provide an environment of safety for both partners. You will be treated with dignity and respect, without judgment, throughout the process. Couples who have experienced this form of therapy usually describe it as life-changing and transformative.

Marathon Couples Therapy offers some practical benefits as well. It’s a good fit for couples who want intensive therapy but don’t live in the vicinity of a Certified Gottman Therapist. It’s also a good fit for couples whose schedules do not allow for them to go to weekly therapy sessions. And finally, it’s a great fit for couples who need to get help immediately.

It is important, however, that you also understand the risks involved. Despite the “nuts and bolts” approach of this method, the Marathon Couples Therapy format may move you more quickly and intensely into the areas of difficulty to be addressed. Therefore, you and/or your partner may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, loneliness, and helplessness. Your therapy may also involve recalling unpleasant aspects of your history together and/or individually. This is done to heal injuries and strengthen the relationship.

Upon completion of the Marathon Sessions, you will complete around seven additional 90-minute follow-up sessions spaced out every three to four weeks. This is the “fade” portion of the “mass and fade” approach and supports the relationship in continuing to utilize the skills learned in Marathon Therapy and helping the changes made, last.

A Roadmap of Gottman Method Marathon Couples Therapy

After you’ve applied for the study, we will schedule a screening with you to ensure eligibility. Following that, we will match you with a Certified Gottman Therapist with whom you will be able to have a free 20-30 minute consultation. The consultation would allow you the opportunity to assure a good fit with the therapist prior to your investment in your relationship. If you decide to move forward, you will go through the following steps:

Therapy Dynamics: Smiling Wife Engages, Resentful Husband Retreats
Loving Black Couple Visiting Therapy Session At Psychologist's Office

Pre-Therapy Questionnaire:

Pre-Therapy Questionnaire: Complete an extensive questionnaire on your relationship at least seven days prior to your first Marathon Session.

Marathon Day 1:

Assessment Phase: Complete an in-depth Gottman assessment of your relationship that includes exploring your relationships history, your individual histories, and a scientific evaluation of your relationship based on the original Gottman Love Lab assessment using a platform called Gottman Connect. Our comprehensive relationship assessment will pinpoint the areas in which you can achieve the greatest growth so you can move forward to a place of strength, reconnection, and hope.

Marathon Day 1-3:

Treatment Phase: The Certified Gottman Therapist will provide specific interventions to support your relationship in moving forward. The treatment phase starts on the second half of day 1 through day 3.

Post Marathon Questionnaire:

Post-Therapy Questionnaire: Complete an extensive questionnaire on your relationship at maximum seven days after your last Marathon session. You will also complete a brief questionnaire about your experience in therapy that the therapist will not see.

Follow-Up Sessions:

Relapse Prevention: You will complete seven or so 90-minute follow-up sessions after Marathon Therapy to help solidify the changes made in Marathon. These 90-minute follow-up sessions are spaced out every three to four weeks.

Follow-Up Questionnaire:

Post-Follow-Up: Complete an extensive questionnaire on your relationship before the seventh session. This assessment will be used to show you how your relationship has changed from the start of Marathon Therapy to now. The Certified Gottman Therapist will also highlight strengths and continued opportunities as you move into the 6-month evaluation.

Six-Month Follow-up:

Six months after you completed your last session, you will be sent your final questionnaire for the study. This will need to be completed within two weeks and you may want to schedule a final session with your Certified Gottman Therapist so they can highlight how changes have stayed and offer any final guidance as you wrap up participation in the study and move forward.

The Marathon Study: Cost and Compensation for Your Participation

Why there is a cost for participation:

While all of the studies Dr. Gottman did during his tenure as a professor were funded with federal grants, grant funding for research on couple relationships is not currently available. Despite this, we still believe more research needs to be done, and we are very excited about the potential and future of marathon-style therapy. As part of your participation in this study, we are asking you to pay the Certified Gottman Therapist session fees. We wish we could provide treatment to couples in our studies at no cost and pay the therapists providing these services, but we simply don’t have the funds to do so.

How we are working to make participation more affordable:

While we aren’t able to cover the cost of session fees, we are able to provide free access to tools and cutting-edge assessment technology, which helps to enhance treatment and reduce the costs of providing care at this level. Many of the therapists participating in this study are also volunteering to provide reduced rates specifically for study participants, allowing you to receive care from highly-trained and in-demand therapists at a lower cost than is available to the general public. Between free tools and assessments and reduced rates, while we aren’t able to cover the cost of therapy, we have been able to take steps to make it more affordable for you and your partner.

The Love Prescription: Seven Days to More Intimacy, Connection, and Joy

From New York Times-bestselling authors Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, a simple yet powerful plan to transform your relationship in seven days.

What makes love last? Why does one couple stay together forever, while another falls apart? And most importantly, is there a scientific formula for love?

Drs. John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. Their goal: to identify the building blocks of love.

The Love Prescription distills their life’s work into a bite-size, seven-day action plan with easy, immediately actionable steps. There will be no grand gestures and no big, hard conversations. There’s nothing to buy or do to prepare. Anyone can do this, from any starting point. There is a formula for a good relationship, and this book will show you how a few small changes can fundamentally transform your relationship for the better.

Drs John and Julie Gottman are excited to introduce this  Gottman Relationship Coach collection, All About Conflict. The first program, “Dealing with Conflict”  teaches the basics of communication in conflict. You will learn which of the problems your relationship faces are solvable, and which you may continue to encounter. If any of these perpetual problems have you stuck, the Gottmans can help you get “unstuck” and understand each other’s perspectives. “Dealing with Conflict” helps prepare you for the regular, inevitable moments of friction that are bound to arise in any relationship. The second program, “What to Do After a Fight” teaches how to navigate more difficult arguments and the feelings that come along with them. If “Dealing with Conflict” makes regular communication “smooth sailing,” “What to Do After a Fight” helps you address rough waters to keep your relationship from capsizing. Often, more serious arguments arise because they touch on values and beliefs one or both of you hold dear. Explore what’s underneath the storm with the game-changing exercises contained in this program.  NOTE: If you already purchased “Dealing with Conflict” or “Making Up After an Argument” individually and want to take advantage of this special offer, make sure you are logged in to your Gottman Connect account and the price difference will automatically be deducted from your purchase of the second program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gottman Relationship Coach?

The Gottman Relationship Coach is a self-guided program based on the popular Gottman Method. the Coach is an inspiring and educational multimedia experience created and designed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman to enhance and transform the wellbeing of relationships. Participants access research-based relationship skill-building tools in a series of interactive videos, exercises, and card decks designed to inspire healthy communication and deeper connection.

There isn’t a specific order you have to follow when working through the Gottman Relationship Coach programs. The first program in the Gottman Relationship Coach series introduces important foundational concepts of the Gottman Method. Each of the subsequent programs elaborate in more depth on these and other concepts. We recommend reading through the programs and picking the one that best suits what you’d like to work on, then continuing with the additional Gottman Relationship Coach programs for further evolution of those concepts. You can also select “What’s right for me?” for some custom recommendations.

Whereas the Gottman Relationship Coach products address specific areas of your relationship you select, the Gottman Relationship Adviser is a complete relationship wellness program. The Adviser takes the guesswork out of improving your relationship by combining assessment and solutions all in one place. Start with a checkup to find out what you can improve, then follow a personalized, step-by-step plan for your relationship.

Yes, customers can benefit from the Gottman Relationship Coaches.  The Gottman Assessment will give you a full snapshot of the state of your relationship based on a detailed self-assessment, then provides recommendations for improvement.

You can find a Gottman-trained therapist on The Gottman Referral Network. This Network of experienced clinicians are certified the Gottman Method-based relationship-building techniques and can use your assessments and work with the Adviser or Coaches to help you get on the pathway to a healthy, long-lasting relationship more quickly.

Yes! Add the Gottman Coach program you would like to gift to your cart, and when checking out, please check the gift box option and enter the information of your giftee. Continue checking out by entering your required billing and payment information. You will receive a receipt, and your giftee will receive an email with your gift note and instructions on how to login!

Gottman Method Outcome Study Application

Gottman Method Outcome Study Application

If you and your partner are interested in participating in the Gottman Method Outcome study, please double-check that you qualify here, then complete the information below. Once you have submitted your application, a staff member will get in touch with you to see if the study is a good fit for you and your partner.

Questions may be directed to Research@gottman.com.

Do you qualify for the study?

Couples must be married or in a committed relationship

Do you live in a qualifying location?

Couples must be willing to travel to see a therapist located in one of the cities listed below or be willing to engage in telehealth counseling. Check here for a list of specific geographic locations.

Are the costs of Couples Therapy sessions covered for this study?

Unfortunately, the cost of couples therapy sessions are not covered for this study. We cover the assessment costs and offer each partner compensation upon completing the final assessment. This is outlined in the Compensation for Your Participation section of the application page where it states therapist’s standard rates still apply.

If we have attended Gottman Workshops (The Art and Science of Love, Bringing Baby Home, or Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work), does that disqualify us from participating?

No it does not. You would not be eligible to participate if you have worked with a Certified Gottman Therapist in the past.

Does the therapist I will be assigned to take insurance?

In short, it depends. Some Certified Gottman Therapists are paneled with insurance providers, some Certified Gottman Therapists are not. Additionally, every insurance provider and policy is different so it is important that you check with your insurance provider to see if your plan covers couples therapy. The best way to find out is to contact your provider and if Couples Therapy is covered, then reach out to Research@Gottman.com so we can see if a Certified Gottman Therapist in your area does take insurance.

Receive therapy from a skilled, compassionate, highly-trained therapist.

Are you currently looking for a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist to use research-based approaches to help your relationship?

The Gottman Institute is seeking couples to participate in an international outcome study on Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

You will be able to work with a skilled, compassionate Certified Gottman Therapist either online via HIPAA compliant telehealth or in-person. Your participation in this study will not only help your relationship, it will also help us understand what couples are experiencing today in our post-COVID-19 world and what helps couples cultivate a healthier relationship in couples therapy.

Costs and Compensation for Your Participation:

Session Costs:

While all of the studies Dr. Gottman did during his tenure as a professor were funded with federal grants, funding for research on couple relationships is not currently available. Despite this, we still believe work needs to be done. As part of your participation in this study, we are asking you to pay the Certified Gottman Therapist session fee. We wish we could provide treatment to couples in our studies at no cost and pay the therapists providing these services. We simply don’t have the funds to do so.

Free Assessment:

We do provide some financial help to couples and therapists by providing all assessment questionnaires at no charge. Couples will meet with a Certified Gottman Therapist and receive access to the new Gottman Connect assessment and an interpretation of the results that your therapist will go over with you. This is an average savings of $450.

Compensation for your time:

Additionally, we are fortunately able to provide compensation for the time it takes to fill out the questionnaires for our study. You will be required to fill out three or four lengthy questionnaires, at the beginning of treatment, at the end of treatment, and six months later. After the final questionnaire is filled out 6 months post-treatment, as a thank you for your time, we are happy to be able to provide one of the following (whichever you prefer and choose after completing the final questionnaire):

Do you qualify for the study?

In deciding to participate in this study, you agree to the following:

Do you live in a qualifying location?

We have participating therapists in the following locations.

Both in-person and telehealth options are available.

You may participate in-person with therapist if there if one available near you in one of the cities listed.

You can also opt to see a therapist online via telehealth if you live in any of the states listed (note that you must still work with a therapist who is licensed to practice within the state you live in). Telehealth may be especially convenient if you live quite a ways away from an available city, or if you live in a state for which there are no available therapists practicing in-person.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the “fee” a Certified Gottman Therapist would charge if we participated in the study?

Fees depend on location, depending on both the individual Certified Gottman Therapist as well as the length of sessions (e.g. longer 90-minute sessions cost more than shorter sessions). The form should provide an estimate based on your state or country as you fill out the application, and once you apply to participate in the study, we will also inform you of a possible estimate of a range of session rates before we schedule a screening call to share more information about the study. Most therapists charge rates consistent with the average rates in their area.

It depends. Some but not all Certified Gottman Therapists accept insurance. Some therapists who do not are still able to offer a Superbill that you can submit to insurance. We would recommend checking with your provider about what they do cover. When responding to the application verification email for the study, please indicate that you are interested in being connected with a therapist who takes insurance and we will do the best we can to find you one.

The reason we need you to cease individual and/or group therapy is because it would confound the results of the study. If you are seeing an individual therapist, going to family therapy, or group therapy, we would not be able to say with confidence that The Gottman Method Couples Therapy is what improved the relationship and individual wellbeing. For this reason, we ask that you not participate in any other forms of therapy if you choose to participate in this study.

You may resume those services once you complete treatment and the 6-month follow-up period has passed, which is when we send the final assessment and wrap up the study. How long treatment takes it completely up to you and your couples therapist. For clarity, this only applies to talk therapy and similar treatment with a licensed therapist. It is okay for this study to continue to see a psychiatrist for medication management throughout.

There are three parts to our answer based on the current literature regarding research on couples therapy. The current research design was approved by an Institutional Review Board.

Part A: The cost.

Most couples therapy research studies are done in university settings in a controlled environment with the benefit of grant funding to allow the cost of therapy to be free. While there is grant funding in other countries for couples therapy, we have not received funding for this research study because there are no funds offered for couples therapy studies at this time in the United States. Not to mention, with a sample size of 120 couples, by far the largest study on couples therapy to date, that would be a very large grant. Despite this, we feel there is still more research needed. In our part to reduce cost, we do offer the assessments for free which is a $475 value. Some of our Certified Gottman Therapists offer sliding scales and insurance (see the section above).

Part B: The Therapist

Most couples therapy studies are completed in controlled conditions such as a university setting with student therapists under a supervisor who may watch the session live (Christensen, et al., 2005). When a couple sees a therapist in their office, there is no supervisor watching every second of the session. The difference in this study is that the counselors being seen are not students but fully licensed therapists who are specifically trained to work with couples using the Gottman Method.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Gottman Method Couples Therapy with couples seen in typical therapy offices. Previous studies on the effectiveness of couples therapy indicated that interventions need to be stronger to effectively help couples. This study requires that participating therapists be Certified Gottman Therapists. A Certified Gottman Therapist has completed three levels of training in Gottman Method couples therapy, had multiple videos of their work scrutinized by Master Trainer Gottman Therapists, and passed a video review process demonstrating that they can effectively use Gottman interventions with couples. There are currently only 411 of therapists that meet these qualifications in the world. By agreeing to participate as a therapist in this study they have agreed to follow the Gottman Method protocol by using the appropriate interventions at the appropriate time during treatment.

Part C: Efficacy Studies In University Settings Do Not Translate to Real Therapy Offices

The efficacy studies in university settings fail to reproduce similar results in a naturalistic setting such as a typical therapy office (Halford, Pepping, & Petch, 2016). Again, this has to do with supervision as well as the type of therapist being studied.

We also know that the screening procedures of university-based outcome studies often include a population that is only 0.5 standard deviation below the mean, meaning they are slightly unhappy (Gottman & Gottman, 2018). However, many couples starting couples therapy are 2.5 standard deviations below the mean indicating high levels of distress (Gottman et al., 2020). This highlights that the university-based outcome studies don’t include the kinds of couples seen in a typical therapist office. Our data from 40,681 couples starting couples therapy indicate that over 80% of couples about to start therapy have serious problems with both conflict and intimacy (Gottman et al., 2020).

Furthermore, the university based studies on the effectiveness of couples therapy screen out many couples who struggle with substance abuse, bipolar, and personality disorders (Baucom et al., 2009; Christensen et al. 2010.). Our data indicates that these struggles are the norm and we need to learn how to help couples with these challenges in a therapy office.
