How Assessment Software Highlights Special Circumstances for Better Relationship Outcomes

Learn how the Gottman Relationship Checkup software navigates complex relationships.

Every couple arrives in therapy with a presenting problem. But beneath it, there are often circumstances that can reshape the clinical picture entirely. Whether those surface early enough to inform treatment, or emerge weeks in after an approach that may not fit has already been applied, may depend on how a clinician gathers information in those first sessions. This is where assessment software can make a difference.

What Is Assessment Software?

In couples therapy, assessment software is a structured digital instrument that each partner completes independently, typically before or at the outset of treatment. Unlike a clinical intake form, it can generate a scored analysis across multiple dimensions of the relationship, offering data that subjective observation alone might not capture.

The Gottman Relationship Checkup is one of the more extensively studied tools in this space. Built on over four decades of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, it is a 337-question assessment that evaluates relationship health across areas including friendship, intimacy, emotions, conflict, values, and trust, with additional sections on parenting, housework, finances, and individual areas of concern. Each partner completes it independently in roughly one hour. The platform is fully HIPAA-compliant, and more than 36,000 therapists have used it in practice.

What Sorts of “Special Circumstances” Could a Therapist Encounter?

Special circumstances are factors that standard intake procedures can sometimes miss. These might include betrayal, addiction and substance use, trauma history, domestic violence, and what Gottman’s research calls enduring vulnerabilities, the patterns and experiences each partner carries into the room. Because each partner completes the assessment privately, these issues may surface earlier than they would in a joint conversation.

The challenge is that special circumstances can remain invisible until they collide with an intervention that was designed without accounting for them.

How Does the Gottman Relationship Checkup Navigate These Special Circumstances?

The Checkup evaluates areas mapped to the Sound Relationship House framework, including Love Maps, Fondness and Admiration, Turning Toward, and Conflict Management, alongside individual areas of concern. Because both partners complete it separately, differences may become visible that might never emerge in a joint session. One partner might report trust while the other reports betrayal. One might describe intimacy as satisfying while the other experiences it as absent.

When one partner’s experience looks very different from the other’s, it may be worth considering whether the standard approach needs adjusting. This can matter most in cases involving betrayal or addiction, where the approach to treatment may need to look different depending on what the assessment reveals.

Does the Relationship Checkup Generate Reports? And Does It Make Recommendations?

Upon completion, the Checkup generates automated scoring and produces reports that include areas of concern and recommendations to help clinicians tailor their approach. An optional client-friendly Couples Report is also available. Reassessment reports offer side-by-side comparisons, which may help make progress more visible over the course of treatment.

Practitioners can register at gottmanconnect.com to begin using the assessment. The first couple assessment is free, with subsequent assessments at $39 per couple.
