Who is this training for?

This training is for psychologists, social workers, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), professional counselors, addiction counselors, and other mental health professionals. Completion of Level 1 Training and Level 2 Training is required, as well as a master’s degree, doctoral degree, or current enrollment in a graduate program within a mental health-related field is required. Therapy experience is highly recommended, but not required.

At the completion of this training, you will be able to:
  • Integrate exercises to foster fondness and admiration between partners.
  • Apply techniques for softening startup and avoiding the Four Horsemen during conflicts.
  • Plan strategies for effective repair attempts and de-escalation.
  • Explain the importance of physiological self-soothing to manage flooding effectively.
  • Apply and practice integrating all the major Gottman method therapy interventions, including Gottman-Rapaport, the Four Horsemen, Flooding, Dreams within Conflict, the Art of Compromise, the Aftermath of a Fight or Regrettable Incident, Stress-Reducing Conversations, Rituals of Connection, and Love Maps.
  • Formulate how to address major comorbidities such as affairs, trauma, domestic violence, addictions, problematic substance use, and behavioral compulsivity.
  • Ensure couples can identify their four horsemen behaviors and implement the antidotes into daily conversations.
  • Integrate how to clarify a couple’s conflicts in terms of solvable, perpetual, and grid-locked problems and use the Dreams Within Conflict technique to help a couple feel hopeful and to achieve a breakthrough in their gridlock conflict.
  • Decide how to successfully intervene when one or both partners are flooding.
  • Appraise how to help a couple reach solutions using the Art of Compromise (Compromise Ovals) intervention.
  • Plan how to intervene sensitively when comorbidities are present.
Participants are asked to bring a short video segment (approximately ten minutes) to the Level 3 training for couples experiencing difficulties and challenges. The video can be provided on a USB drive, external hard drive, or uploaded in advance to a secure, commonly used format (e.g., MP4, MOV, or WMV) via a password-protected link. The therapist’s work with the couple will not be critiqued. In fact, the video does not even need to show the therapist—just seeing the couple is sufficient.

The purpose is to use these couples to illustrate how the Gottman Method can be applied to tough cases. The trainer(s) will describe how they would treat these couples, and then participants from the audience will volunteer to role-play the couples. The trainer(s) will demonstrate a variety of interventions, and participants will then have the opportunity to practice these interventions in supportive small group settings, role-playing the couples shown in the videos.

Bringing a video segment is not required, but it will help make the training more meaningful for everyone. If you cannot bring a video, provide a brief written description of a challenging Level 3 Training: Practicum.

We are unable to support outdated or non-standard video formats (e.g., Mini DVDs, “High-8,” “Super-8,” or international formats that cannot be converted). To ensure compatibility, please provide videos in a standard digital format such as MP4, MOV, or WMV.

Level 3 Training: Practicum and the Certification Track are separate courses. If you have any questions, please contact training@gottman.com.
