2014 has been a great year at The Gottman Institute. We traveled to North Carolina and Illinois and Hawaii, launched an online assessment tool for clinicians, and still found time to have fun. What was your most memorable moment or experience with us this year? Leave a comment below and let us know.

As we countdown the top 10 things that happened in 2014, we cannot help but be excited about what 2015 will have in store for us. We look forward to spending it with you.

1.The Siegel-Gottman Summit

Drs. John and Julie Gottman shared the stage with Dr. Dan Siegel in what proved to be the most inspirational training event of the year. As one attendee told us, “The integration of Neurobiology and Gottman Method was exciting and insightful!” The synergy among the three presenters completely captivated us during the two-day event in July at Meany Theater on the University of Washington campus.

2.    The Gottman U.S. Tour

In collaboration with National Marriage Seminars, we made four stops on the Gottman U.S. Tour in 2014 (Raleigh, San Diego, Chicago, Hawaii) and trained over 1,000 clinicians in Gottman Method Couples Therapy: Level 1 Training. While each stop was unique, we were completely blown away by the response we received in Chicago as over 500 therapists and educators filled the training room to full capacity. It was an experience that we will never forget. Did you miss the Gottman U.S. Tour? Drs. John and Julie Gottman are presenting Level 1 Training in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY as part of the Gottman Coast-to-Coast Tour in 2015. Click here for information.

3. The Gottman Relationship Checkup Launched

We launched the Gottman Relationship Checkup on October 6 to an overwhelmingly positive response from clinicians. So overwhelming, in fact, that the website temporarily crashed. Over 2,000 clinicians have signed up and over 600 couples have been assessed using the tool, which automatically scores a couple’s strengths and challenges, and provides the therapist with clinical feedback and specific recommendations for intervention.

4.    Business Insider Article Went Viral

Business Insider picked up our interview with Emily Esfahani Smith of The Atlantic on November 9.  The article, titled “Science Says Lasting Relationships Come Down To 2 Basic Traits,” quickly went viral and – as of the time of this posting – has been read 14.7 million times. You can read it here.

5.    The Art & Science of Love in Australia

We were honored to present The Art & Science of Love in Australia for the first time this year. The weekend workshop for couples was offered by Certified Gottman Therapist Robyn Blake-Mortimer in October near Adelaide. By popular demand, additional workshops will be offered in Australia in 2015.

6.    Dr. John Gottman’s Lecture at Town Hall Seattle

A sold-out crowd filled Town Hall Seattle on May 5 to listen to Dr. John Gottman present “Making Love Last and Marriage Work” as part of the 2014 ParentMap Lecture Series.

7.    Principia Amoris Released

New York Times bestselling author Dr. Gottman’s latest book was released on October 27 and has received endorsements from many media outlets and authors, including Dr. Sue Johnson. According to Dr. Sue Johnson, “This book offers a fascinating synopsis of John Gottman’s many breakthrough discoveries over his decades of research into couple relationships. As always what he has to say is original, relevant, and wise.” Principia Amoris introduces Love Equations, mathematical modeling of relationships that helps understand predictions.

8.    The Relationship Alphabet Blog Series

Certified Gottman Therapist Zach Brittle’s Relationship Alphabet series on The Gottman Relationship Blog was wildly popular in 2014. Readers followed along all year as Zach explored relationship topics from A to Z, beginning with his first article “A is for Arguments” on January 6. You can access all postings from the Relationship Alphabet series here

9.    New Gottman Relationship Blog

We launched a comprehensive redesign of The Gottman Relationship Blog on November 10. The New Gottman Blog is cleaner, brighter, and easier to navigate than ever before. Have you explored all the new features? Visit the Blog Series tab to read articles on topics from Emotion Coaching to Relationships in the Digital Age. Visit the Our Research page to learn about Dr. Gottman’s four decades of breakthrough research with couples and families. Don’t miss the Resources page, which provides recommended tools from The Gottman Store for deepening your understanding of The Gottman Method.

10.  40,000 Facebook Fans

Our community on social media saw tremendous growth this year. We were fortunate to eclipse 40,000 fans on Facebook, 14,000 followers on Twitter, 3,000 followers on Pinterest, 2,000 followers on LinkedIn, and we even launched an Instagram account in November! We encourage you to connect with us on social media if you have not already, and we look forward to engaging with you in 2015.
