Celebrate 30 Years
of relationship science
Founded in 1996 by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman, The Gottman Institute turns 50+ years of research into practical tools for real people – whether you’re dating, married, raising kids, or supporting others as a clinician. Thirty years later, this work has reached millions of people around the world.
The Gottman timeline
1970s
It all started with a question.
Could the difference between happy and unhappy couples actually be observed?
Dr. John Gottman and his colleagues began studying real couples to find out.
1986-Early 1990s
The Love Lab opens.
Not a laboratory. Just an apartment.
Couples cooked dinner, watched TV, read magazines, and had everyday conversations while researchers observed the small interactions that shape relationships.
1994-1999
The research becomes something people can use.
Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman joins John to turn decades of findings into practical tools for couples and therapists. Together, they develop the Sound Relationship House.

The Gottman Institute is founded!
(This is where our 30 years officially begin.)
2000s-2008
