Past research indicates that two periods are most critical for the survival of marriages: (a) the first seven years of marriage and (b) the period during which the first child reaches 14 years of age.

In satisfied, long-term marriages, wives' and husbands' health was equivalent: in dissatisfied marriages, wives reported more mental and physical health problems than did their husbands.
