Certified Gottman Therapists are all licensed or certified therapists who practice independently in their state, province or country and are not supervised or monitored by Drs. John and Julie Gottman or the Gottman Institute. These therapists have paid an administrative fee to become a member of the Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network.

Whenever a referral service is offered, it is necessary to issue a disclaimer.  The following is our disclaimer, and we ask for an acceptance of these terms. Despite the rigorous training that Certified Gottman Therapists receive from The Gottman Institute (TGI), the Gottman Institute cannot warrant or guarantee the competence or effectiveness of any Certified Gottman Therapist listed on this web site.  Using this service to find a therapist is voluntary and will not result in any liability against TGI. In no event shall TGI be liable for damages to any user of this site for the voluntary selection of a therapist, for the services provided by any therapist listed, or for any other damages which may occur. TGI cannot and does not provide any warranties related to the information contained in or resulting services from a therapist listed on the TGI web site.

More Information:

A Certified Gottman Therapist is an individual who has completed the certification program offered by The Gottman Institute.  This program includes completion of the following steps:

  1. Level One: a two-day professional workshop on Level I: Bridging the Couple Chasm: Gottman Couples Therapy - A New Research Based Approach presented by Drs. John & Julie Gottman, either in person or on DVD/videotape, or by a senior Certified Gottman Therapist. 
  2. Level Two: Assessment, Intervention & Co-Morbidities, a four day training led by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, either in person or on DVD/videotape.
  3. Level Three: The Certification Practicum, a four day program led by Drs. Julie & John Gottman. 
  4. Post-Level III Certification Consultation: At least 8 individual sessions or 12 group sessions of consultation with a senior Certified Gottman Therapist and Consultant.
  5. Post-Level III Tape Review: submission of DVD/video tapes for review by a Senior Certified Gottman Therapist.  Based on those videotapes and confirmation from their consultant, they qualify to become a Certified Gottman Therapist.
