
Treating Couples with Eating or Body Image Issues
Event Overview
Learning Objectives. By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Apply core principles and interventions from Gottman Method Couples Therapy (or a comparable modality) to effectively support couples experiencing FEWBI-related concerns.
2. Explain at least one advantage and one disadvantage of using a transdiagnostic approach to eating disorder diagnosis and treatment.
3. Describe essential concepts and terminology related to FEWBI issues and eating disorders to facilitate effective communication with couples.
4. Identify and evaluate personal biases and unique challenges encountered in delivering couples therapy to clients affected by FEWBI issues.
5. List a minimum of four challenges commonly faced by therapists working with couples where one or both partners experience FEWBI concerns
6. Name and distinguish a minimum of 5 stereotypes regarding people with FEWBI issues or eating disorders that are barriers to seeking couple therapy or treatment in general.
7. Describe at least six core competencies couples can develop to inform and strengthen a treatment plan.
8. Implement a minimum of 2 interventions designed to help couples with FEWBI issues.
The workshop will be a combination of didactics and experiential learning. It is strongly recommended that participants have taken Gottman Level 1 and Gottman Level 2 training or another training in couples therapy, although this is not required. This training is open to students in a master’s or doctoral program in counseling as well as licensed professionals.
