About John Gottman, Ph.D.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman are engaging and illuminating speakers who present with humor, wisdom, and clarity. John Gottman, Ph.D. is world-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, including the study of emotions, physiology, and communication. He was recently voted as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Therapists of the past quarter-century by the Psychotherapy Networker magazine. He is the author of 190 published academic articles and author or co-author of 40 books, including his NY Times best seller, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. He is the Executive Director of the Relationship Research Institute, which creates programs for new parents and treatments for domestic violence.

His breakthrough research on marriage and parenting has earned him numerous major awards including:

  • Four National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Awards
  • The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Distinguished Research Scientist Award

Dr. Gottman was the co-founder of the Gottman Institute™ with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman.  He is executive director of the nonprofit Relationship Research Institute, currently evaluating interventions for the transition to parenthood.  Dr. Gottman is an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Washington and founded what the media termed, "The Love Lab", where much of his research on couples' interactions was conducted.

In Seattle, John Gottman co-presents, with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, four couples workshops per year, The Art and Science of Love.
