About John Gottman, Ph.D.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman are now scheduling talks for 2008 and 2009. They provide talks together or separately. Together, they address relationship trials and tribulations and what to do about them.

Their talks are research-based but down-to- earth, and combine social science with humor, role plays, and great advice. John's individual talks focus on building fulfilling marriages, revving up romance, and strengthening parenting skills. Julie's talks center on sustaining and enhancing relationships, and dealing with stresses that impede them.

John Gottman is world renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, involving the study of emotions, physiology, and communication. His breakthrough research on marriage and parenting has earned him numerous major awards including:

  • Four National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Awards
  • The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Distinguished Research Scientist Award
  • The American Family Therapy Academy Award for Most Distinguished Contributor to Family Systems Research
  • The American Psychological Association Division of Family Psychology, Presidential Citation for Outstanding Lifetime Research Contribution

Dr. Gottman was the co-founder of the Gottman Institute™ with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman.  He is executive director of the nonprofit Relationship Research Institute, currently evaluating interventions for the transition to parenthood.  Dr. Gottman is an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Washington and founded what the media termed, "The Love Lab", where much of his research on couples' interactions was conducted.

In Seattle, John Gottman co-presents, with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, four couples workshops per year, The Art and Science of Love. He also co-presents an Advanced Study clinical training. His style of presentation is clear, informative and chocked with humor. He is beloved by his audiences everywhere.
