Reimagined for the 21st century

The All-New, Legendary Love Lab

From it’s historic origins in 1986 at a research lab at the University of Washington, the world-renowned Love Lab, founded by Dr. John Gottman, has developed the most powerful relationship assessment available today. This evidence-based assessment is designed to help clinicians diagnose the most complex relationship challenges.

After putting thousands of marriages under a microscope, we now understand the science of relationships. Through groundbreaking mathematical models integrating nonlinear differential equations, we can reliably predict and chart the future course of a relationship. More importantly, we are now able to provide data-driven suggestions for positively adjusting the course of a couple’s life together.

Pursuing the Gottman mission of democratizing global access to even the most powerful therapeutic tools, in 2019, Affective Software, in partnership with the Gottman Institute, leveraged the latest in cutting-edge technological advancements to bring the Love Lab into the 21st century. With the release of Gottman Connect, an easy-to-use online platform, clinicians and couples all around the world can now leverage the power of the Gottman Love Lab.

“Since the 1980s, Gottman has brought more than three thousand married couples – just like Bill and Sue – into that small room in his “Love Lab” at the University of Washington campus. Can a marriage really be understood in one sitting? Yes it can, and so can lots of other seemingly complex situations. What Gottman has done is to show us how.”

A Powerful Assessment in 4 Simple Steps

Register and invite your couples to the Gottman questionnaire

If you haven’t already, start by signing up as a clinician on Gottman Connect via a simple, free registration process. Once logged-in, easily invite your couple to register using an automated process. Each partner gets their own, private login to Gottman Connect and will need to complete their clinicial questionnaires on their own.

Record two conversational videos

After each partner has submitted their questionnaire on Gottman Connect, each couple will need to record two videos together: an “events” conversation, and a “conflict” conversation.
Since each clinical practice is different, there are various ways of submitting these videos for analysis. Couples can record these videos on their own, or together with their clinician. Clear instructions are available once you login.

LoveLab Conversation through Laptop

Guide your couple in rating each video

Once both videos are recorded and uploaded, each partner will need to log in to Gottman Connect and watch their recordings, using an easy-to-use dial to rate how they felt during the recorded conversations. According to Gottman’s research, this self-rating is a critical step for the evaluation process.

Carrie-and-Couple

Complete the clinician’s checklist

After your couple has completed their Gottman questionnaires, recorded, and rated their two videos, you will need to answer a brief checklist based on your professional observations of this couple. This is the final step in the evaluation process – once you submit your “Clinician’s Checklist”, the virtual Love Lab will automatically calculate and generate several reports, providing you and your couple deep insights into their relationship.

Additional instructions and report walkthroughs are available upon login.

A Brief History
of the Gottman Love Lab

The Gottman Love Lab is the world’s original couples laboratory, first opened in 1986 at the University of Washington by Dr. John Gottman. Watch this brief documentary to explore its 40-year history, and learn below about how the Love Lab has been reimagined by The Gottman Institute for the high-tech modern age.

A Brief History of the Gottman Love Lab

Research Begins

Dr. John Gottman begins systematically observing couples in his first lab at the University of Illinois in the 1970s

"The Love Lab"

In 1986, Gottman (right) and Robert Levenson (left) build an apartment laboratory at the University of Washington dubbed the “Love Lab” by the media.

Founding TGI

In 1996, Drs. Julie and John Gottman co-founded The Gottman Institute to bring this research to the world.

Did you know?

Over many years, Gottman and Levenson observed hundreds of couples and noted their facial expressions, heart rates, blood pressure, skin conductivity, and the words they used in conversation with their partners.

They discovered that low-risk couples maintain a “magic ratio” of five positive interactions to every one negative interaction during conflict.

First Research Director

In 2015, Drs. John and Julie Gottman asked Carrie Cole, a Master Trainer for the Gottman Institute, to be the Institute’s first Research Director.

The Lab at TGI

In February of 2018, the Gottman Love Lab was re-imagined by The Gottman Institute in the heart of downtown Seattle and opened its doors to the public for the first time.

The All-New Gottman Love Lab

With breakthroughs achieved by expert mathematician and optimization specialist Dr. Vladimir Brayman and his team, ASI launches an all-new virtual Love Lab, available globally online for the first time in history.

In the  News

The Love Lab has been notably profiled in Blink, Malcolm Gladwell’s NYT best seller, and has been featured by Dateline NBC, BBC, The Anderson Cooper Show, TIME Magazine, and The Atlantic.

Sample Exercise

This preview shows one partner’s instructions for the “Dream Catcher” exercise, intended to help couples tackle gridlocked problems.

  1. Choose a perpetually gridlocked problem to work on before you do this exercise from the Perpetual Problems and Gridlock section’s Exercise.
  2. Decide who will be the Dream Catcher and who will be the Dream Speaker—later you will switch roles.

When you are the Dream Catcher, all you have to do is read aloud each of the following questions one by one, in the order in which they are written. After you ask a question, the Dream Speaker will do their best to answer it. Be sure to give your partner plenty of time to do so.

Also, it’s important that you not bring up your position on the issue or challenge the speaker’s answer when you are the listener. Just proceed reading aloud each question and listening to your partner’s answers until all the questions have been asked. If you like, you may ask follow-up questions if you are confused by one of your partner’s answers. But be sure your question is only for clarification.
Afterward, it will be time to trade roles.

Here are the questions for the dream catcher to ask:

  • Do you have any core beliefs, ethics, or values that are part of your position on this issue?
  • Is there a story behind this for you, or does this relate to your background or childhood history in some way?
  • Tell me why this is so important to you.
  • What feelings do you have about this issue?
  • What would be your ideal dream here?
  • Is there a deeper purpose or goal in this for you?

Hopefully, you now understand each other’s positions on your issue more fully. It’s a great time now or next time to work together on creating a compromise for your issue.

Psychometrics
for the Relationship Checkup

The Gottman Relationship Checkup measures specific strengths and challenges that couples face in their relationship and in their individual lives. Dr. Gottman’s lab began designing many of these assessment questionnaires in 1980 and it has taken decades of diligent research to harness this knowledge into a streamlined assessment tool.

Before this tool was built, Dr. Gottman needed to know that The Sound Relationship House questionnaires, which are included in the Gottman Relationship Checkup, accurately measure what they claim to.
For example, if there is a challenge in Fondness and Admiration for one partner but not the other, he needed to be confident that we would actually see less respect and more contempt in a SPAFF coding of the couple’s Conflict Interaction and/or a Buehlman Coding of the couple’s Oral History Interview. He was delighted to report that this was, indeed, the case.

Relationship Checkup Questionnaire

The Gottman Relationship Checkup contains several additional questionnaires, some of which are in the process of being tested and validated. Below is a chart, with a list of the questionnaires used in the Gottman Relationship Checkup, which show whether cutoff scores are based on psychometric data or on clinical experience while normative data is being collected. Cutoff scores may change as new data is collected. An asterisk indicates that the questionnaire is a Gottman Sound Relationship House scale. Every questionnaire needs to be interpreted in the context of all the other information gained during the assessment process.

Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse

Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse

Learn ways to help couples have safer, more loving relationships.

Learn ways to help couples have safer, more loving relationships.

Domestic violence has been a phenomenon in romantic relationships for as long as relationships have existed. Domestic violence has been called intimate partner violence in recent scholarly literature. These terms are one and the same. This workshop is designed to guide therapists towards a deeper understanding about intimate partner aggression, and learn ways to help couples have safer, more loving relationships.

Built to Support the Work You Do

Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse is an advanced clinical training designed to equip therapists with the structure, discernment, and confidence required to work effectively and ethically with couples impacted by aggression and abuse. This course offers both depth and practical application—integrating research-based principles of Gottman Method Couples Therapy with clear clinical decision-making frameworks to enhance safety, accountability, and therapeutic outcomes.

Through robust structure, real-world interventions, and guidance from experienced Gottman Therapists, you will strengthen your ability to assess risk, foster responsibility, interrupt harmful patterns, and prevent relapse. Participants leave with greater clarity in treatment planning, increased clinical precision, and renewed confidence in navigating some of the most complex dynamics couples present. This is not simply theory—it is skill development that sharpens your impact and elevates your clinical effectiveness.

Faculty

Presented by Dr. Carrie Cole, Research Director and Director of the Love Lab at The Gottman Institute, and Dr. Don Cole, Clinical Director at The Gottman Institute, Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse will provide a framework to help the couples suffering from intimate partner aggression who walk into your practice.

The Focus of this Training

The focus of this training is on psychological aggression, sometimes referred to in scholarly literature as intimate partner aggression.

Current researchers have not always made the distinction between aggression and types of violence in the intimate partner violence literature, and have included physical abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and coercive control in their definitions of the term.

We have worked hard to offer you depth and variety within this course, hoping that something you experience, see, hear, or feel will inspire and motivate you.

During this training participants will:

  • Identify situational versus characterological aggression.
  • Distinguish between the strategies for dealing with characterological aggression.
  • Discover the four major treatment goals for reducing aggression in couples.
  • Apply proper treatment strategies for bi-directional aggression and for unidirectional aggression.
  • Differentiate underlying contributing factors to IPA and how these can be dealt with in therapy.
  • Examine four treatment goals
  • Apply treatment goals with couples experiencing partner aggression in their relationship

Integrate and adapt the principles and interventions of Gottman Method Couples Therapy into your own approach to working with couples.

Enhance accountability and success in your clinical work like never before.

Achieve greater clarity and focus in Gottman Method Couples Therapy by integrating a robust structure to work with couples and prevent relapse.

Benefit from the experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm of Gottman Therapists who will help build your competence and confidence.

What’s Inside this Training?

  • Each participant will receive materials designed to help therapists and counselors effectively facilitate assessments, interventions, and exercises with their couples that can be used immediately following the training.
All assessments and exercises may be photocopied or printed as handouts for couples.
  • 68-page Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse PDF Digital Manual
  • Therapy for Partner Aggression and Abuse Training Certificate of Completion upon passing the Assessment of Knowledge
  • Up to 7.5 CE Hours for the training are available for an additional fee.

Who is this training for?

This training is for mental health therapists, counselors, social workers, clergy, military family life chaplains, life coaches, recovery coaches, professors, students and professionals who work with couples affected by alcohol, drugs and/or behavioral addictions.

No prior experience or training in the Gottman Method is required; however, therapists who work with couples will greatly benefit from having at least completed Level 1 Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

We’ve all experienced what John Gottman refers to as physiological “flooding,” or Diffuse Physiological Arousal (DPA). It’s the “fight or flight” response that kicks in when we’re upset and our heart rate exceeds 100 BPM.

If left unchecked, our research has shown that flooding can lead to either escalated conflict or stonewalling and, ultimately, emotional disengagement.

So what do you do when your clients are flooded in front of you?

When you sign up for the Gottman Pro Newsletter below you’ll also immediately receive this free exercise, The Five Secrets to Calming Yourself: A downloadable handout showing you how to effectively calm a flooded person, using a relaxation exercise adapted from our bestselling Gottman Relationship Guides.
