CERTIFICATION PRACTICUM COURSE DESCRIPTION:

  • Fine-tune and master your skills using Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Level 3: Certification Training.  
  • During the Practicum, workshop participants, together with Dr. Julie Gottman, examine videotaped cases of couples brought in by workshop colleagues.
  • Dr. Julie Gottman uses these videotaped cases as learning and teaching tools to deepen understanding of when and how to use various Gottman Method approaches and interventions, and how to break destructive patterns and replace them with meaningful interactions.
  • Dr. Julie Gottman leads discussions, demonstrates techniques and provides guidance in developing a roadmap for clinical decisions.
  • Participants have the chance to practice and refine their use of Gottman Method Couples Therapy through participation in role-plays, demonstrations and discussions in a small group setting.    
  • Participate in thoughtful discussions and Q & A sessions with with Dr. John Gottman.
  • Receive personal on-site guidance from Drs. John and Julie Gottman and Senior Gottman Therapists.

Following Certification Practicum, Senior Certified Gottman Therapists provide participants with eight individual or twelve group phone consultations over a period of up to two years. Registration is by application and acceptance only. Applications must be received by July 11, 2008 to participate in the 2008 training.

PREREQUISITES

  • Completion of Level 1 (DVD/VHS Home study or prior 2-day professional workshop) -
    Marital Therapy: A Research Based Approach
  • Completion of the Level 2 Workshop -
    Gottman Method Couples Therapy: Assessment and Intervention
  • A Masters or Doctoral level counseling degree
  • A minimum of three years (five preferred) of post-degree outpatient clinical experience, including 100 hours of couple’s therapy and 100 hours individual therapy with adult populations.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CERTIFICATION TRAINING
Please send completed application and completed payment form along with along with payment by check or credit card (Mastercard/ Visa/American Express). Please click here to download the 2008 Certification Training Application. You may submit your application materials anytime prior to July 11, 2008 (for the July 2008 training). Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and class size is limited.

  • Once your materials have been reviewed, you will be contacted regarding your registration status. If you are not accepted into the Practicum, you will not be charged any tuition or fees.

CERTIFICATION PRACTICUM TRAINING FEES
The fee for the Certification Training Practicum is $1,500 for the July 2008 training ($1,200 for alumni who have attended the Level 3: Certification Practicum Training prior). Fee for the four-day Practicum includes the final video review and feedback following Supervision.

CERTIFICATION PRACTICUM VIDEO PARTICIPATION
Participants are highly encouraged (although not required) to bring a video tape of a couple from their practice to the Practicum, to share for teaching and role-play experiences. The purpose of the video tapes is not to critique the therapist but to view real couples and learn how the Gottman Method can be applied to each case. Note: Please bring your video in a standard DVD or VHS format. Unfortunately, we are not able to support the following formats: Mini DVD’s, “High-8,” alternate or non-standard international formats, such as “Super-8.” Please contact us if you have questions regarding video participation.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Prior to three weeks of the Certification Training program, you can receive a full refund minus a $100 administrative fee. Within three weeks of the program, only workshop credit will be issued.

CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION
22.0 CE hours are available for the Level III Certification Practicum. While the Gottman Institute and R. Cassidy Seminars, Inc. will endeavor to obtain continuing education approval, we cannot guarantee it. For questions about whether credit applies to your professional discipline, please contact your state board for information regarding CE approvals, or contact Beverly Collins Parnell of The Gottman Institute at (888)523-9042x4 with additional questions.

Psychologists: The Gottman Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Gottman Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 

Professional Counselors, Marriage & Family Therapists & Social Workers:

NBCC: The Gottman Institute is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

CA: These courses meet the qualifications for 27.5 CE hours for the Advanced Study and 22.0 CE hours for the Certification Practicum for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Provider #3334.

ASWB: ASWB provider #1082 is approved as a provider for continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards: www.aswb.org , phone 1 800 225-6880, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  R Cassidy Seminars/Amedco maintains responsibility for the program. 

Satisfactory Completion Statement: The Level II Training program and the Level III Certification Training Practicum are two separate courses. To obtain a certificate of attendance for either program, participants must have paid tuition or made payment arrangements, signed in and out each day, attended the entire part, and completed an evaluation in order to receive a certificate of attendance. Participants not fulfilling these requirements will not receive a certificate. Failure to sign in or out on any day will result in forfeiture of credit for the entire part. No exceptions will be made. Partial credit is not available. Certificates issued by The Gottman Institute will be handed out at the completion of each workshop. Certificates issued by R. Cassidy Seminars, Inc. will be mailed to participants after the training, or posted on R. Cassidy Inc.'s website.

The Gottman Institute does not recommend nor endorse any specific hotel.
