The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network

Welcome to The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network. Whether you seek support for you and your spouse, your partner, other family members or for yourself, your decision to seek therapy is a big step towards creating positive change in your life. Now you must find the right therapist, and The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network can help you find a Certified Gottman Therapist* in your area.

The Relationship Center and Referral Network of The Gottman Institute is a network of Certified Gottman Therapists™ who provide private therapy support to couples, families and individuals around the world. The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network’s growing network of therapists have been specially trained and certified by Drs. John and Julie Gottman to provide Gottman Method Couples Therapy™. Currently, nearly 200 therapists are Gottman Certified or are in training, worldwide, to provide Gottman Method Couples Therapy™ to couples in their geographic location.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy™

Gottman Method Couples Therapy combines John Gottman’s 30 years of research on couples’ relationships with Julie Schwartz Gottman’s more than 30 years of clinical practice. Through research-based interventions and exercises, Certified Gottman Therapists help couples break through barriers to achieve greater understanding, connection and intimacy in their relationships. Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a structured, goal-oriented, scientifically-based therapy. Intervention strategies are based upon empirical data from Dr. Gottman’s three decades of research with 3,000 couples. This research shows us what actually works to help couples achieve a long-term healthy relationship. Gottman Method Couples Therapy was developed out of this research to help you and your spouse or partner:

  • Increase respect, affection, and closeness
  • Break through and resolve conflict when you feel stuck
  • Generate greater understanding between you and your partner
  • Keep conflict discussions calm
  • Maintain improvements in your relationship

The therapy usually consists of two or three sessions of assessment and subsequent treatment sessions, typically on a weekly basis. Gottman therapy helps couples develop and strengthen the qualities of positive, healthy relationships that Dr. Gottman discovered in his 30 years of research with couples.

Marathon Therapy

Some Certified Gottman Therapists™ offer Intensive Marathon Therapy through the Relationship Center and Referral Network. If there is not a Certified Gottman Therapist in your area, arrangements can be made to have longer sessions for several consecutive days with a Certified Gottman Therapist who provides Intensive Marathon Therapy in a nearby state or city. In addition, Intensive Therapy can sometimes be scheduled with a Seattle-area Certified Gottman Therapists prior to or following a couples workshop in Seattle. To locate a Certified Gottman Therapist who provides marathon therapy, please click on Find A Therapist. You can read about each therapist’s specialties under Areas of Expertise, or call The Gottman Institute at 888-523-9042 x1. All requests for therapy are completely confidential.

Certified Gottman Therapists™

Prior to their intensive training with Dr's. John and Julie Gottman, Certified Gottman Therapists completed a graduate degree in Psychology or a related field and were trained to provide therapy to individuals, families, children and/or adolescents as well as to couples. Many have had their own private therapy practices for many years or even decades prior to entering training in Gottman Method  Therapy.

All Certified Gottman Therapists have completed a basic training program, an Advanced Study seminar and a Gottman Certification Training program that includes individual and/or group consultation with a Certified Gottman Consultant.

(Only Certified Gottman Therapists may use the title Gottman Therapist. If you are unsure about whether your therapist is certified, you may contact us at 888-523-9042 x1).

After receiving certification, independently practicing Certified Gottman Therapists may then choose to join The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network. Certified Gottman Therapists who are members of The Gottman Relationship Center and Referral Network are listed on a provider directory on this website. See Find A Therapist.
