Research-based couples training with the flexibility to meet your needs

The Gottman Relationship Institute makes it easy to receive training to enhance your current skill set and to help you meet and exceed your career goals. Our top-notch workshops and home-study courses provide you with research-based professional instruction and resources that you can use immediately with your clients. Choose to enroll in a workshop course, take a series of home-study courses, or do a combination of both.

In these trainings you will:

Learn to integrate research-based methods and inspire transformation in your work with couples.
Identify the communication patterns, friendship basis, and conflict management dynamics that characterize enduring intimate relationships.
Discover a roadmap for helping couples to compassionately manage their conflicts, deepen their friendship and intimacy, and share their life purpose and dreams.

There are three levels in our professional training program. You may train in one, two, or all three levels. Each level provides you with a progressively deeper level of instruction and understanding. Completion of all levels of this program leads to certification as a Certified Gottman Therapist.

Level 1: Bridging the Couple Chasm: A Research Based Approach:

A two-day workshop, with Drs. John and Julie Gottman presenting films from their clinical office. Available in person or as a DVD Home-Study program. This workshop is also offered by senior Certified Gottman Therapists.

Level 2: Assessment, Intervention & Co-Morbidities:

A four-day interactive workshop presented by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, either in person or as a DVD Home-Study program. Also presented by Certified Gottman Therapists.
Pre-requisite: Completion of Level 1.

Level 3: Certification Practicum: Advanced Workshop Plus Certification Track:
Part A: Live Workshop: A four-day personalized, interactive workshop presented live (only) by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. View films of challenging couples’ interactions from actual clinical sessions and learn how to integrate Gottman Method interventions through demonstrations and supported practice sessions. This training is offered live only. Pre-requisites: Level 1 and 2 training and criteria per Level 3 Application packet. Clinicians now have the option to attend the Level 3 workshop only, or continue on to consultation and video review.
Part B: Certification Consultation: Complete a minimum of 8 individual sessions or 12 group sessions of consultation(in person or via phone) with a senior Certified Gottman Therapist.
Part C: Post-Consultation Video Review: Submit videos for review by a Senior Certified Gottman Therapist. Videos must demonstrate mastery of 6 specified Gottman Method Interventions.

It is possible to complete Level 1 and Level 2 as a DVD Home-Study and then attend the Level 3 workshop.
